ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents an overal view of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents concept of homegrown development (HGD) for Africa has of late pushed its way back again into the frontline of both African and international development discourse. While the need for good governance remains high, a lot of obstacles to policy ownership in Africa are also linked to external conditions including its colonial history, position in the global economic structure, debt overhang and aid conditionality. Economic diversification was the theme of the first African Economic Summit held in Johannesburg in 2010. Effort is needed from all stakeholders to encourage deep transformation and help sustain the progress being made. Donors must provide more policy space. There is need to move away from the type of loan and straightjacket aid conditionality that constrain agency.
