ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the forgotten, or perhaps overlooked, history of the journals that have helped legitimize Comics Studies. It begins by discussing the purpose of journals in academia, how they are produced, and the impact of digital technologies. The chapter discusses the four contexts of journals as: early journals that laid a foundation for comics scholars, journals that currently publish comics scholarship, journals solely devoted to comics, and journals with a specific niche in comics research. Comics Studies has grown large enough to sustain niche research. The digital age has accelerated the publishing process and is undergirded by scholars' desire to share information and grow the field. In a personal interview, Aimee Valentine, the founder and editor of inkt|art, notes that Online comics journals have a great opportunity to crossover with one another, to advance the work done by others, to reference articles and publications, and perhaps even collaborate in terms of covering particular comics themes, issues or artists.
