ABSTRACT

On the basis of intercultural communication theories there is a need to understand cultural differences in order to explain and assess individual routes and community, which makes them important political and social instruments for peace and development. The possibility of intercultural understanding is based on scientific research that shows there is something like a rational community, which could be shared by all people. Multiculturality and diversity are typical European features. Not only is Europe a multicultural continent but also the European countries are multicultural, either because they host many nations and languages, or because they received along their history successive waves of immigration and other strong cultural influences. The EU is aware of this fact, which is the reason why it financially supports scientific projects able to promote the understanding of cultural differences between Europeans and making a positive use of them, which is a major challenge.
