ABSTRACT
For the fi rst time in history, more people are living in towns and cities than in the countryside and at least one billion intra-and peri-urban dwellers are estimated to practise agriculture. Their farming varies from growing herbs on a windowsill, to cultivating a vegetable allotment, to raising poultry under their bed, to running a dairy.
