ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the Epic’s connections to other Western and Ancient Near Eastern literature, such as Greek epic and the Bible. It considers the later reception of Gilgamesh in popular culture. The chapter aims to compare recognition and renown among Mesopotamian heroes in the ancient world, it seems clear that the relative modern obscurity of most Mesopotamian heroes did not have its genesis in ancient times. It also aims to draw parallels between the Epic of Gilgamesh and other great works of literature from a variety of cultures have been a feature of scholarly approaches to Gilgamesh’s story since almost the moment of its rediscovery. The chapter describes many types of love, and also explores the role of women in the Epic, particularly Gilgamesh’s relationship with his divine mother, Ninsun. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
