ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the history and size of Mexico City (MC) and its surrounding areas, and posing the problem of its possible global character, the complex social and demographic structure of the central Megalopolis. It focuses on the main aspects of language use within the complex structure of the city and the Megalopolis. The chapter reviews some linguistic problems that have been studied and highlights areas of future research, shedding light on general issues of language use. Although the MC variety is undoubtedly the most studied in all of Mexico, most of the research does not have a particularly sociolinguistic orientation. The chapter concludes by discussing the extent to which MC and its metropolitan area may exert a global sociolinguistic influence, considering that not all of the expectations about it are fully met.
