ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses techniques for describing crime events. The “analysis” part of crime analysis is more than just mapping. To be truly effective, it must include the many elements of statistics. This chapter begins with the different ways data can be presented, including tables and graphs. It discusses how different presentation techniques are appropriate for different audiences. It also addresses the univariate statistical procedures crime analysts can use to summarize and describe data. Finally, it discusses how to examine the relationship between two characteristics as a part of crime analysis.
