ABSTRACT

Nonsectarian social movements are important generators of inclusive politics that rise above particularistic concerns to incorporate a wide range of citizens. Divided societies are particularly inhospitable environments for any concept of politics or identity to take root that does not take an ethnic form. Nonsectarian movements produce multifaceted and complex contributions to peace. Their impact on divided societies does not always have clear outcomes' in terms of reforming or substantially changing public policy. Shortly after, a number of fundamentalist Christian organizations coalesced into the Stop the Parade Coalition (STP). The STP, in its unsuccessful attempt to ban the parade, invoked existing legislation regarding political parades in the Belfast city centre. That is, a Parades Commission currently deliberates over so-called contested political parades in Northern Ireland by subjecting parades to a code of conduct which tries to ensure that they are not deliberately provocative.
