ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the behavior of the sound in a room with particular reference to how the room's characteristics affect the quality of the perceived sound. It also examines strategies for analyzing and improving the acoustic quality of a room. The chapter looks at how rooms affect the output of loudspeakers. It analyzes various situations and examines various techniques for achieving a good acoustic environment for hearing music. Most music is listened to within a room and is therefore influenced by the presence of boundaries, and so it is important to understand how sound propagates in such an enclosed space. The reverberation part of the sound in a room behaves differently compared with the direct sound and early reflections from the perspective of the listener. Clearly the level of the reverberant field is strongly affected by the level of average absorption.
