ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the major role of the nation-state in the era of platform technologies, with the case of google but not excluding other platforms. On the one hand, it investigates the primary role of the nation-state in the platform industries as a strong supporter in the global scene. On the other hand, it analyzes an interplay between the government and transnational corporations so that it develops the discourse of the role of the government in the era of neoliberal globalization. The chapter focuses on the ways in which the nation-state has supported and influenced platform corporations in forming their close relationship. The chapter explores whether neoliberal ideologies, emphasizing a small government regime in economy, culture, and technology, have completely altered state-interventionism in the midst of neoliberal globalization with the case of US based platforms. This chapter examines the role of the government in the realm of platforms in the process of neoliberal globalization.
