ABSTRACT

Bucharest is a city in an almost continuous 'in-between' condition, born from a long history of never-ending transitions and intermediary moments that lasted long enough to leave their mark on its urban spaces and on the everyday habits of its people. The Public Bath works within the in-between time, in a street festival, that suspends the everyday rules of the city and creates an intermediary moment. The Letter Bench deals with the intermediary status of a place, an in-between location with unclear and flexible limits. Romanians rediscovered the appeal of action in public space, in politics and the civil society, in the economy, in the media or in culture. Designed as basic public space generators and having a high capacity to instantly transform the site, the fast action tools proved in some cases to be 'too ephemeral' for their given contexts.
