ABSTRACT

Torrent House at East Molesey in Surrey was designed for a graphic designer, Peter Devenish, and his family. The Cantacuzino considered strategies for reusing redundant structures such as pumping stations, mills, warehouses and religious buildings and in addition to their adaptation for domestic purposes examined their reuse as university buildings, cultural centres, offices and museums, among others. Contemporary articles on Torrent House also promoted the novelty of the project, focusing on its appearance in relation to its riverside setting, the historic built environment in which it was located, and the 'subtopian' character of the industrial building from which it was created. Torrent House was published in a number of magazines and journals. With the exception of a couple of minor variations, the articles that appeared in House Builder and Estate Developer and Interior Design magazine are facsimiles and were probably authored by Wood.
