ABSTRACT

Fenwycks, a split-level, half-timber house at Camberley in Surrey, is a British example of a fully realised developing home: a house designed for planned alteration to meet the anticipated long-term needs of its occupants. The entrance hall was planned as an open zone within the lower living area, where it could function as a reception space or as part of the main living area at times when additional room was needed. The kitchen, which was fairly narrow, was lined with wall cabinets and floor cupboards on both sides. The units were in birch or Douglas fir plywood and incorporated under-cabinet lighting. The provision of power points was generous, as it was in all of the houses that Wood designed, and anticipated future requirements. The article 'Fenwycks: a house fit for a family' showed the result of both extensions and described the benefits of planned expansion, noting: All often house extensions are unsightly appendages, carried out at substantial cost and inconvenience.
