ABSTRACT

Globalization is a process of international integration that results from the exchange of commodities, ideas, and cultures. The outcomes of this process include increased economic and cultural interdependence, along with the genesis of new cultural hybrids. Although the term globalization only came into vogue in the late twentieth century, the practice of regional exchange and integration has been around much longer. In earlier times, this was a slow process, since it relied on travel by beasts of burden and ships, and on written correspondence. Later, the tempo of change quickened with the advent of trains, planes, the telegraph, and the telephone. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, fax machines, the Internet, smartphones, and other technological advances have further accelerated the speed of globalization and the ease with which people can communicate with others around the world.
