ABSTRACT

Thepremiseofourchapteristhatneedsandgoalsarefundamental elementsoftheself-systemandthattheprecisenatureoftheirfunctioningisbestunderstoodwithreferencetotheself-system.Wewillargue thatthecrucialelementofagoalistherepresentationoftheindividual herselforhimselfapproachingandrealizingthegoal.Withoutthisrepresentationoftheself,agoalwillnotbeaneffectiveregulatorofbehavior. Goalsarerarelycognizedintotalabstraction.Mostgoals,whetherrelativelymundanelikegettingdressedinthemorning,ormorecomplex suchasgainingtenureinaprofession,occasiontheconstructionofa "possibleself'inwhichoneisdifferentfromthenowselfandinwhich onerealizesthegoal.Itisthe"I"thatholdsorpossessesthegoalorthe threat:forexample,Ihopetofinishcollege;Iplantobuyacar;Iam afraidoffailingthistest.Agoalwillhaveanimpactonbehaviortothe extentthatanindividualcanpersonalizeitbybuildingabridgeof self-representationsbetweenone'scurrentstateandone'sdesiredor hoped-forstate.Thecriticaldeterminantofwhetheragivengoalwill
