ABSTRACT

The argument arises out of the metaphysical differences between tokens and types. Suppose we accept that token acts of predication are true or false. Any such token is true or false because it consists in a subject predicating a property of an object. When Obama asserts that Clinton is eloquent he predicates the property of being eloquent of Clinton. In doing so he sorts Clinton into the group of peoplewho are eloquent. The truth-conditions for his act of predication are determined by a rule given by the property of eloquence: his assertion is true iff Clinton is eloquent.
