ABSTRACT

The lack of peace and long-term security in South Caucasus region impedes the development of mutually beneficial regional cooperation, based on common values and shared interests, which promises to ensure a better future. Formerly a Soviet backyard, the South Caucasus is increasingly emerging as a vital part of the extended European space. The dissolution of the Soviet Union brought new challenges and new perspectives to the South Caucasus. Considering how important the region is to a broader Eurasia strategy dealing with Russia and Iran, the United States (US) declared the Caspian basin as vital to its national interests. It is clear that Azerbaijan's energy strategy has been the major driver of the South Caucasus' integration into the global community. The Azerbaijani-Israeli alliance has strategic importance for US interests, particularly in the Greater Middle East and Central Asia. Azerbaijan's strengths today include energy security, a growing economy, modern infrastructure and a remarkable degree of stability.
