Concluding Remarks

This volume has endeavoured to establish ‘age’ as a category of literary history, delineating it in its interaction with gender, narrative genre and illness. Whereas public awareness of the ‘greying’ of contemporary societies has reached a global dimension, this has not been reflected in a cultural discourse on old age and ageing. Therefore, my aim has been to conceptualise age in analogous ways to the category of ‘gender’, to which it is shown to be related in multiple ways.
