ABSTRACT

When working with process drama, in addition to her other functions, the teacher must also carry with her the 'head' of the playwright. The playwright functions not only to ensure that the episodic nature of the drama connects and unfolds as a coherent narrative but is also responsible for the levels and type of tensions which will hold the students' interest and provide the structure that will enable them to find more playwriting responses from within themselves. Tension can be introduced into the drama in many different ways, but often takes the form of a barrier, restriction, some kind of opposition, conflict or dilemma which interferes with the continued smooth flow of the action. The playwriting component in process drama is not confined to or constrained by the notion of the kind of final draft of a play that might appear on the stage of a theatre.
