ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the particular skills which are required of the advanced DJ: not only scratching and mixing techniques but also the question of 'moving the crowd' with appropriately-chosen recordings. Most mixers will be adequate for scratching but the faders will need to be in excellent working order because most advanced scratches combine one hand on the vinyl and the other on the fader or cross-fader: DJs need to be confident that the mixer will not let them down if they are to relax to a sufficient extent. Most important to the non-scratching DJ is the skill of beatmatching. The fact that someone would turn from a 'classical' orientation to not only a pop one but, moreover, an Electronic Dance Music (EDM) orientation is particularly interesting because it raises a question about educational provision and learner expectation.
