ABSTRACT

This chapter explores pedagogical questions around whole class engagement, methods of interaction and the institutional pressure to keep the learners occupied and demonstrably advancing their capabilities. It focuses on the time management in the classroom and offers a brief consideration of the management of classroom space. The teacher who desires an inclusive classroom in which challenging behaviour is both understood and effectively combatted should strive for 'that elusive "empathy" built on mutual respect'. For the music teacher, engaging with Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and urban music can be one very effective method of generating a sense of mutual respect in classrooms – particularly inner-city classrooms where hardcore EDM is especially likely to hold popularity with young people, but also in pretty much any classroom today, given the popularity of such urban music in the current era.
