ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. Ecolinguistics analyses language to reveal the stories one lives by, judges those stories according to an ecosophy, resists stories which oppose the ecosophy, and contributes to the search for new stories to live by. The chapter describes how ecolinguistics described in the book moves towards to focus on how language is used to tell stories about the world. It describes some criticisms of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) which are relevant to this form of ecolinguistics, and finally brings together some of the voices in the book into a final 'gathering'. The criticisms of CDA are very useful in helping to shape ecolinguistics in the future, and avoid some of the pitfalls that have been pointed out in other values-led linguistic inquiries. Many of the criticisms that have been advanced of CDA could potentially apply to the form of ecolinguistics described in the book.
