ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on college access programs through an examination of Latino immigrants’ transitions to community college. Understanding the experiences of Latino students, and particularly those of immigrant backgrounds, is critical to developing interventions that better meet all Latino students’ needs. The chapter begins with a review of the literature on college access programs, with an emphasis on how they relate to Latino and immigrant students. Through survey and interview data, the following sections provide insights into how Latino immigrant students meet the challenges they experience as they prepare for and navigate community college transitions. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how college access programs can more effectively meet the needs of immigrant students in the community college pipeline.
