ABSTRACT

Children really enjoy music. Young children often have a natural interest in music, even in infancy. Joint music making offers a great many opportunities for the development of social skills. Listening to music together also provides great bonding and learning opportunities. Music lessons involve extended periods of sustained concentration, along with the learning and daily reading of musical notation and musical theory. For most children, preschool is too early for formalised music lessons or choirs. Most vocal professionals will recommend that individual singing lessons begin after the age of 11 or for a boy after he has gone through puberty. While having access to an instrument is a great idea at any age, more formal instruction is not usually recommended until the age of six at the youngest. Joint music making offers a great many opportunities for the development of social skills. For example, when preschool children are using instruments in a group setting, they may need to take turns.
