ABSTRACT

Reading for preschoolers means spending time in the world of bunnies on scooters and ballerina dogs. Most preschoolers will pick up short words and letter sounds easily, but a small group will struggle. At preschool age, children should feel relaxed about their learning and be led by their interests. Most preschoolers will pick up short words and letter sounds easily, but a small group will struggle. A child with dyslexia will really struggle with any task that requires representing, holding and/or using individual speech sounds. Parents who would like to help with phonics learning may find it useful to look online where there are spoken examples for each letter. Many schools ask parents not to teach letter names, but rather letter sounds, as this can cause confusion. Research shows that early awareness of the sounds that make up words is a good predictor for ease in learning to read.
