ABSTRACT

As illustrated in the previous chapter, hidden youth is a developmental process, during which there are variations in the punitive denunciations received from dominant society as well as in the interaction between the dominant adults’ punitive responses towards the youth’s deviance and the youth’s responses and adaptation to these societal responses. The process starts with the creation of the dominant dichotomic ideology of promising youth versus deviant youth. Promising youth are those youths most desired by the dominant class, because they possess characteristics which are valuable for the development of a knowledge-based society, such as academic qualifications and the intention to contribute to society (“Repay,” 2009).
