ABSTRACT

Tēnā koutou katoa I would like to discuss what is meant by the “creative potential” of Māori

communities and what is mātauranga Māori (traditional Māori knowledge)? In doing so, I will offer a practical example from my own work that expresses and elaborates these two questions. The example I will offer is an initiative entitled “te whare tapere” (houses of entertainment, storytelling, and dance) that is an expression of the “creative potential” of both mātauranga Māori and Māori communities.
