ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine how a growing movement called Indigenous research has influenced practice and advocacy in terms of paradigm shift, and in terms of enhancing or highlighting the relationship between theory and practice/advocacy. The foundation for the framework of Indigenous research is Indigenous psychology (IP), recognized as an emerging field, especially in countries that have a long history of the IP movement, including the Philippines. There have been great advances in theorizing, in developing research methods, and more significantly, in applying the indigenous approach to psychological practice and advocacy. Produce an indigenous version of the exogenous or imported materials, adapting the foreign material to the indigenous context. For example, they may translate Western theories, or modify psychological tests or other measures, or replicate Western studies. Instead of clinical psychology, I have used health psychology since this was discovered to be broader and more relevant in the Philippine experience.
