ABSTRACT

This chapter explains that one good predictor of volunteering is prior service or relationship with the organization. Organizations that are more likely to attract young workers generally have special days of service that can give individuals exposure to the organization. The chapter discusses that younger generations are staying in school longer and receiving more degrees, their exposure to understanding of community service is higher overall. Traditional programs work for some individuals, but the younger generation may want to give and still remain at arm's length from actual interaction. The chapter also explains that Baby Boomers require different activities at certain stages of life. Boomers generally do not limit their volunteering to one organization. Programs like Foster Grandparents and Senior Companions help seniors give their time and talents to programs tailored especially for them. Thus, the chapter illustrates that connecting individuals with community, non-profit, faith-based, and other service groups is the main focus of the Senior Corps program.
