In October 1956 Seretse Khama – grandson and heir to the throne of the Chief Khama we met in Chapter 4 – returned to his home in the protectorate of Bechuanaland after six years of exile in Great Britain. He had been forced from his homeland not by his people, the Bangwato, but by the British government acting at the behest of the governments of South Africa and Southern Rhodesia.
