ABSTRACT

Our next experiment was of the same type as those described in Chapters 1 and 2: presentation of static figures without explicit mention of their construction or transformation, but such that the subject may, if he is so inclined, treat them as the results of prior actions or operations, and perhaps modify his remembrance of them in accordance with his operational schemata. Several models were used, involving two lines or two pairs of lines represented by four matches or four strokes drawn on paper. The lines themselves were objectively equal but of different shapes-an arrangement that sets up a conflict between the numerical ( 4 and 4) and the spatial correspondence, and gives rise to protracted memory distortions instead of the advances we have described in Chapters 1 and 2.
