ABSTRACT

In this chapter we shall be discussing the remembrance of a series of operations A + (B + C) = D and (A' + B') + C' = D' (=D), and shall determine to what extent it depends on the subject's grasp of associativity (in the logical sense of the term), with the two series A= A', B = B', C = C' and D = D' (Figure 16) before his eyes. This problem differs from the last (transitivity) in that the latter involved additive compositions of the relations (which happened to be associative as well, a point that did not, however, have to be stressed), while the present experiment calls for additive operations with the obj~ts themselves.
