ABSTRACT

Hwang Sunwon wrote seven novels and more than 100 short stories, making him the most prolific of modern Korean authors. Quite a few of these works are available in translation. This chapter, on modern Korean short fiction, presents excerpts from one of his novels, namely, Cranes. Hwang won awards such as the Asian Freedom Literature Prize in 1955 and the Korean Academy of Arts Prize in 1961. O Yongsu, was a founding member and later the chief editor of the prestigious literary journal Hyondae Munhak. He wrote more than 100 stories and received considerable recognition for his work, including the Asian Freedom Literature Prize in 1959 and the Republic of Korea's Order of Merit. The chapter presents extracts from his work, "The Bird of Passage", which was first published in Hyondae Munhak in February 1958. "Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum Mural" and presents North Korea's version of events of the Korean War.
