ABSTRACT

This chapter achieves a number of essential goals for this book. First, it presents a typology of surfing literature, identifying overall themes and categories. Surfing-related scholarship is diverse and multidisciplinary and the chapter argues that all areas may be seen as encompassing different aspects of sustainability through surfing’s unique engagement with the ocean and nature more broadly. The overall categories of surfing literature are then discussed and related to the theoretical framework of the book, which encompasses risk, modernity and transitions towards sustainability. The chapter then presents a literature review of the most recent work that relates directly to surfing and sustainability. This is organised with a number of overarching themes, including a systems approach, technology, industry and sustainability, informing policy domains and reconceptualising sustainable surf spaces.
