ABSTRACT

Surfers Against Sewage is one of the world’s foremost surfing environmental activist and conservation groups. The chapter explores some of Surfers Against Sewage’s programmes and activities that engage thousands of people globally, having a direct impact on marine and coastal environments. Highlighting insights from Surfers Against Sewage founder and current CEO, the chapter explores the central role of Surfers Against Sewage in positive change towards sustainability during the past 40 years. The chapter highlights the relationship of early Surfers Against Sewage strategies with today’s model of political, social and environmental engagement. In particular, the chapter explores the emerging issue of ocean plastic and how Surfers Against Sewage has successfully raised public awareness of this issue. The chapter identifies Surfers Against Sewage as a catalyst for positive change towards sustainability.
