ABSTRACT

This chapter considers some interventions in autism which focus on developing communication. It focuses on to the advice given on how adults should modify their behaviour and communicative style. The term child used in the chapter describes facilitative adult interactive style, as most of the interventions presented here involve adults tending to work on a 1:1 basis with the children. Regarding adults, the plural form is preferred as there is usually more than one adult using the intervention with a child for skill generalisation purposes. The chapter discusses different interventions which belong to these categories and focuses on the advice they give for a facilitative adult interactive style. It presents past studies reporting changes in children's spontaneous communication as a result of implementing these interventions. The chapter illustrates the impact of parents' and practitioners' interactive style on children's communication. There are a variety of approaches aiming to develop social communication in children with autism.
