ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings related to the frequency of children's spontaneous communication pre- and post-intervention. It describes the effect of type of activity on children's spontaneous communication, and the children's communicative functions and methods respectively. The chapter also describes the findings on the implementation of Adult interactive study (AISI) by the staff. The children in whom staff saw the greatest difference post-intervention were, interestingly, the two children who increased their initiations the least according to the video data. However, when their communicative functions and methods were analysed both these children decreased the times they initiated reject or used behaviours of concern to communicate. During the post-intervention focus group interview staffs were asked about the activities they had seen greater differences with regard to children's spontaneous communication. The communicative methods coded from the video data were split into two broad categories, pre-symbolic and symbolic.
