ABSTRACT

Chapter 7, “Women’s NGOs: Advocating for Global Women’s Rights,” explores the activity of U.S. nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working to achieve equal rights for women on a global scale. The political life of American women has come to not only involve quests for individual political leadership and movements for gaining political equality for women in the United States but also engagement in activities and the joining of networks for global women’s rights and the improvement of women’s and girls’ status. This chapter surveys the nature of these groups, their stimulus for organizing, and their goals. They are incredibly diverse, engaging in a vast array of activities to achieve their aims. Their interests range from eliminating violence against women and energizing women’s economic positions to changing legal systems and boosting women’s political leadership presence. Their practices include awareness campaigns, governmental lobbying, training women to be leaders in other countries, and working within transnational advocacy networks.
