ABSTRACT

Nikon users should be aware of a terminology conflict. Some Nikon flash units offer an operating mode called "Balanced Fill Flash" or a similar variant. All outdoor photographers find balanced flash to be an extremely useful technique. Fill flash depends primarily on ambient light to illuminate the subject. Use flash as a secondary light source, close to the camera and pointed directly at the subject anytime harsh shadows are created. Main flash uses flash as the main or primary light source. The ambient light is secondary. The flash unit is commonly positioned a little above and somewhat to the side of the camera to create the contrast in order to reveal shape and texture. Many images are improved by using balanced flash. Balanced flash works well for landscapes as well as butterflies, flowers, close-up and macro as well as other subjects. Balanced flash is especially useful for landscapes.
