ABSTRACT

Electronic flash is certainly the most flexible and convenient means of lighting macro subjects. The flash shooter has plenty of convenient options for controlling the light from their flash. Shaw and West devised a simple flash bracket for attaching the small and undedicated flash to the camera, held near the front of the lens and above it. This position held the flash free of shadowing by the lens hood, close to the subject and in a position providing pleasant lighting. Handheld flash photography of small and macro subjects, made easier by a small flash mounted on a flash bracket, allows chasing after the subjects without the inconvenience of a tripod. The short duration of the flash allows effective high shutter speeds which avoids sharpness problems because of camera shake. Optical triggering can be troublesome in macro work. For macro work with a flash bracket, a cable connection is a good idea.
