ABSTRACT

Countless photographers are convinced that combining ambient and flash is hard to understand and manage. Most problematic is the tendency for beginners to shoot ambient light and flash at the same time for the initial exposure. Because they used flash, they are unable to discern whether some part of the image needing exposure change requires a change in ambient exposure, flash exposure or both. The ambient light and the light from the flash are added together to produce the final lighting scheme and the last exposure. Ambient light exposure can be compensated with the exposure compensation control (EC) and flash is compensated with a separate flash exposure compensation control (FEC). When using Manual mode, shutter speed will affect the ambient light exposure. The automatic exposure modes on many cameras are Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and one or more Program modes. Auto flash and Manual exposure are extremely useful for many close-up and macro images.
