ABSTRACT

Using main flash, ambient light is determined by the role the light plays in illuminating the subject. It might be backlight, sidelight, and usually serves as a fill light. When using main flash, almost all of the light exposing the image comes from one or more flash units. Main flash is widely used by portrait photographers to provide better separation between a subject and the background. Photographers as a whole use frontlight most of the time. It's a meritorious shooting method because the shadows primarily fall behind the subject and don't degrade the image. Crosslighting is a technique that relies on using two light sources in directional opposition. Main flash is far more useful than fill flash because proper use of main flash offers a vast assortment of lighting schemes. The control the flash provides over the brightness of the background relative to the foreground allows spectacular lighting for many different situations.
