ABSTRACT

This chapter reveals small-scale qualitative research with a Norwich City Football Club fan: Paula. It begins with a brief overview of sport-spectator pleasures, including mention of football fandom. This contextualization highlights the lack of research with same-sex attracted and gender-diverse individuals and communities. The chapter is based on one semi-structured interview and follow-up emails with one Norwich City FC fan. It is also based on on-going qualitative research involvement with football cultures, same-sex attraction and gender diversity, as well as getting to know Paula. The chapter interrogates the methodological issues surrounding small-scale qualitative research. Then, it focuses on Paula's experiences of her transgender, transsexual and queer subjectivities and her football fandom. Specifically, the chapter discusses her experiences of coming 'out' to the other-mostly male-football fans she knows and her on-going love of football. It shows football-fandom pleasures as complex, important and socially significant.
