ABSTRACT

This chapter examines each of the five phases of the performance management process and then considers some essential criteria for effective performance management on a global business scale. The chapter examines important principles and practices of performance appraisal for expatriates as well as brief considerations for ensuring the effective appraisal of long-term inpatriates and Third Country Nationals (TCNs). The primary focus in this chapter is at the individual level. Systematic approaches for evaluating and managing groups, business processes, and organizational performance are also needed in an effective, comprehensive performance management. On the upstream side they link with company global competitiveness and strategic management success, and include strategic integration and coordination, workforce alignment, and organizational learning and knowledge management. Particular dimensions of national culture that have been found to be very relevant in performance management include power distance, masculinity-femininity, communication context, collectivism-individualism, and orientation toward control.
