ABSTRACT
The United States is a suburban nation. 1 Since the 1960s, the number of people living in the nation’s suburbs has exceeded the number in central cities. Even gentrification, the much celebrated “return” to the cities discussed in Chapter 3 , poses only a relatively small countertrend that does not offset the long-term drift of population, economic resources, and political power to the suburbs.
