ABSTRACT

Barry Lubin, after spending five seasons traveling with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, joined the Big Apple Circus, New York's famed one-ring circus, where he became the 'Face of the Big Apple Circus' as his character Grandma, starring in the show for 25 years. Lubin is featured in the PBS mini-series circus. He has been inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame, the Sarasota Ring of Fame, and received the Lou Jacobs Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In Atlantic City as a teenager Lubin worked at the Steel Pier, an entertainment complex that had movies and various shows, and at the very end of the pier, about a half-mile out to sea, was something called the Water Circus. The clowns that performed at the Steel Pier Water Circus: the first half of the show they did these amazing dives; the second half they put on funny costumes and did clowning.
