ABSTRACT

Each person has a distinctive voice that generates a unique acoustic signal or voiceprint - that, in effect, produces a visual representation of our speech. Along with DNA research, voiceprint technology is adding a new dimension to the field of forensic science - potentially able to be used like fingerprint technology. The voice can similarly alter or manipulate the feelings and perceptions of the receiver. Based only on the sound of our voice, others also are able to make pretty quick, but still accurate, judgments of our age, sex, appearance, and socioeconomic status. Pitch, rate, volume, articulation and pronunciation, and vocal quality and tone are vocal properties to enhance our communicative power. Pitch is the voice's rising or falling tone or its inflection. Speech rate is a measure of how quickly or slowly words are spoken. The intensity or volume of voice exists on a continuum that ranges from extremely soft to extremely loud.
