ABSTRACT
Around the year I050-in some favoured regions such as Normandy and Flanders perhaps a little earlier, in others somewhat later-a new era dawned, which was to last until the late thirteenth century. This was the period of large-scale land clearances, and to all appearance it saw the most considerable additions to the total area of land under cultivation in this country since prehistoric times.
