ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Luisela Alvaray takes a closer look at the emerging funding arrangements, assessing the impact of multiple intra- and transnational collaborations. She then aims to map the international networks of production and distribution of films in Latin America in the twenty-first century. In 1989, representatives from 13 Latin American governments signed an agreement to jointly formulate policies that would benefit all countries involved in terms of the financing, production, and distribution of films. Ibermedia has promoted the program DocTV Latin America, which helps production of documentaries and its distribution to all member countries. Television has been Ibermedia's main outlet for distribution. Some celebrated films supported by Ibermedia are La jaula de oro, El casamiento, Pelo Malo, No, Contracorriente, Carancho, and Gigante, just to mention a few. Another important intergovernmental institution that has contributed to integrate the Latin American audiovisual space is Mercosur Audiovisual.
