Comparatively, the minor triangle focuses on the linguistic items by examining the relations between form, meaning, and value with data collected from Putonghua. The major triangle approaches data from a broader perspective by referring diachronically to Old Chinese and synchronically to dialects of the Chinese language, other than Putonghua. We will illustrate how each of the three angles may be of use in the following subsections.
